Who is KWC Crisis Management?

KWC currently offers crisis management training including a basic course, an instructor course and a refresher course. The company was founded in the 1980s. The goal of training is to minimize the use of Personal Control Techniques (PCTs, or physical hold restraints) in favor of verbal approaches. But the training does still include PCTs, as well as, various defensive techniques (e.g. blocks and releases).

What is KWC’s Mission?

To provide high quality training in crisis management and non-aversive personal control techniques (PCTs) to agencies serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We strive to make training affordable and on-going costs minimal.

What kind of training is offered at KWC?

• There is a two-day Basic course on managing crises and performing PCTs. The cost of this course is $650 per person.
• There is a two-day Instructor course on how to teach the basic course. The cost of this course is $750 per person.
• There is a one-day Refresher course available for $375 per person.

Instructor certification is good for three (3) years and a certified instructor will need to attend a refresher course to renew certification. Instructors taking the Refresher course will need to provide proof of prior certification.

Once an agency acquires one or more Crisis Management Instructors, the agency can train and certify their own staff members without additional cost or contact with KWC. The agency will then provide certification of its own staff.

An individual who has received certification as an instructor is only permitted to provide training in the agency they were with when they received their training. Instructors cannot offer training outside their own agency unless they receive new certification from a new agency.

Please note: If the agency provides services to individuals from the NJ/DDD, then the agency must meet requirements from the Division, specifically Division Circular #19, which specifies, among other things, that each staff member must demonstrate competence in PCTs on an annual basis. Therefore, the agency must establish a system for these annual refresher classes as KWC does not provide refresher training to the agency’s staff. This becomes solely the responsibility of the agency.

Where are classes held?

Training is typically held at 6550 Delilah Road, Suite 101 in Egg Harbor Township, NJ 08234. Classes may also be available at other locations including The Arc of Bergen and Passaic, and The Arc of Morris County. Please check the schedule for locations.
